Background of the

Fundraising Initiatives

Performance art, even in peaceful times, is vulnerable and relies heavily on a strong connection with society. During the full-scale war, artists in Ukraine lack a stable means of earning a living through lessons, performances, or other work. Some have even sustained physical injuries and need retraining. The only way to survive today is to take on side jobs, live off rapidly diminishing savings, support each other, share food, and contribute to various initiatives within one's means. To respond quickly and address urgent situations, we must constantly unite and share resources. The situation is critically dire in finding solutions both for meeting basic needs and for continuing artistic practice under these dramatic circumstances.

To support performance artists and practitioners who remain in Ukraine during the war, in March 2022, we, along with the Ruban Production ITP team, decided to create the "Emergency Fund for Performance Art Practitioners in Ukraine" and opened separate accounts specifically for collecting donations. By the end of 2022, we, along with our partners, organized about 10 special online festival programs and participated in over 100 solidarity events. For example, in Germany, we held the festival program “Dance from Ukraine” in Jena, a panel discussion at Tanzkongress 2022 titled “War and Violence – What Can Dance Do?” in Mainz, and “Dancing in Times of War” at Euroscene Leipzig in Leipzig. In France, we participated in the Festival d’Avignon with a panel discussion “Crises et solidarités” and a special program “Pavillion de Future.” In the United States, we were part of the “Voices of Resistance Festival” in New York, and in Taiwan, we took part in the Taiwan Art Annual 2022 with a video intervention, among other events.

Thanks to the support of partners and donors, in 2022 we were able to provide one-time emergency charitable aid to over 300 Ukrainian independent artists (from the fields of dance and theater) who are in Ukraine, addressing more than 700 requests received from 73 cities and towns across the country.
